JUNE MEETING IS: June 8, 2011

7:30PM AT SPRINGDALE FARM’S

VISITOR EDUCATION CENTER

700 COLBY STREET, SPENCERPORT, NY

JUNE PROGRAM TOPIC: Show ring etiquette given by Tara Defendorf and Laurie Neubauer

##############################

MINUTES OF THE NORTHAMPTON DRIVING SOCIETY INC.

May 11, 2011, MEETING

The meeting came to order at 7:30 p.m., and there were 23 members present.

Secretaries’ Report: The Recording Secretary asked if all had reviewed the April 2011 minutes and if any corrections were needed. Maureen K said the name of an NDS member mentioned in the minutes should be corrected to read Teresa H not Theresa H. The Corresponding Secretary said she received a thank you card from Lori P for the gift card. Get well cards and gift cards were also send to Michelle S and Kathy Pi; and a thank you card was received from Kathy. Laurie N made a motion that the Secretaries’ Report be approved and Maureen K seconded the motion. There was a vote to approve the Secretaries’ Report and all members voted “aye.”

Treasurer’s Report The Treasurer reported that there was approximately $11,184 in the treasury. Members asked how many NDS members there were last year, and the Bob B said there were about 100 members compared to 85 members this year. Terry Brooks made a motion that the Treasurer’s Report be approved and Nancy B seconded the motion. There was a vote to approve the Treasurer’s Report and all members voted “aye.”

President’s Report: Tara D again reminded members about driving safety.

Old Business: None.

New Business:

Show: Co-chair Laurie N said there were about 15 entries for the NDS show on June 5, 2011. The show committee feels the reason why there are so few entries is because of the economy and the weather this spring—horses have not been worked enough to be in shape for the show. Laurie suggested that entries be taken up to the show and the late fee for post entries be waived. Laurie also posed the question whether emailing the prize list and making it available on the NDS website rather than mailing it is working. Sue Z said she prefers having the prize list mailed to her. Last year there were 28 entries the day of the show, and the prize list was also emailed and available on the website and not mailed out. Nancy B suggested that something be sent out about our show being a “warm-up” show. Bob Balso said we need to make a decision whether the dinner should be canceled, since there were so few people signed up. It was decided that a decision would be made about the dinner on Monday, May 16, when more people had the opportunity to sign up. It was also decided that an email be sent out immediately about the show and the fact that this year entries would be accepted up to the show with no late fee and to ask people to sign up for the dinner by May 16, and follow-up calls be made as well. Laurie also announced that there would be a show committee meeting at her house on Tuesday, May 24, at 7 p.m. Esther R again told members that show sponsors were needed. The pin commemorating the 25th anniversary NDS show that will be given to competitors and volunteers was passed around.

Quilt: Sue Z asked members to give her their completed quilt blocks no later than the next meeting in June. Seven squares have been turned in, but 12 are needed for the quilt. She also requested members to return their quilt blocks to her if they are not going use them, so she could give them to other members to use

Meeting Program: Tara said a program is needed for the June meeting—a program about show turnout was suggested.

Open Forum:

Former NDS member Don Steg passed away.

Sue Z said the CDE clinic has been canceled due to the inclement spring weather.

Esther R asked if anyone knew who the mystery NDS member was mentioned in the April newsletter, who turned out to be Ruth F. Esther also suggested that someone write a critique of proper manners in the show ring as an article in the newsletter.

The next meeting will be on June 8, 2011.

Bob B made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Nancy B seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Martin’s Spring Auction
(Nancy Murphy)

This year is Martin Auctioneers’ 40th
anniversary year, and there was a reception on
the auction grounds on Thursday evening,
April 28th to celebrate. Paul Martin, Jr. talked
a little about the history of the family
company and some of his long-time
employees, and there was a slide show of past
auctions to view while enjoying appetizers
and drinks. Several NDS members, including
Katie S and I, were there as well as many
auction regulars we have come to recognize.

There were far fewer carriages in this
year’s catalog session on Friday than in the
past few auctions and it was definitely a
buyer’s auction, although the NDS members
who took vehicles to sell in the auction did
well. There seemed to be the usual amount of
carriages and sleighs in the field, but most
sold for bargain prices there, too. The
weather was good and it was nice to get a
preview of our spring still to come (I hope),
as the flowering trees were in full bloom and
the tulips and creeping phlox were gorgeous.

Wayne and Esther R and I
drove down to Pennsylvania on Wednesday to
spend some time in Lancaster County and
were privileged to have dinner that evening
with an old order Amish family. Many
families in the area open their homes to
Englishers for dinners to supplement their
incomes and we enjoyed our experience very
much.

If you’ve never been to the carriage
auction or if it’s been a while since you’ve
gone, you should consider going. It’s a great
experience even if you aren’t in the market
for a vehicle.

SHOW INFORMATION

We are in need of people for the ring crew
Sunday afternoon. Please contact Laurie if
you can help.

Also there are still classes that need
sponsors and we always need additional ads.

Prices are: 1/4 page $15, 1/2 page $25,
Full page $50, Patrons $25, and Class
sponsors $50.

Deadline is May 12, 2011
#####################################

LET’S MEET A MEMBER

This month’s member will be a mystery
member. I’ll give you the facts and you figure
out who the member is. We will use MM to
represent the member.

Horses have played a large part of this
member’s life. In fact riding began at the
tender age of 3. Of course it was bareback on
a trusted member of the horse population on
MM’s family farm and under the watchful eye
of Dad.

With age came longer legs, saddles and
more spirited horses. Speed became the name
of the game to the extent that rodeo games
became a favorite pass time. Western saddles
gave way to the English riding style and
activities centered around Pony Club. Our
MM taught classes there for several years.

It wasn’t until around 1995 that our
MM entered the world of carriage driving.
Lollypop Farm provided the horse to train and
drive. In fact that horse became part of their
ads for a while. If I told you the horses name
you know right away who MM is.

All this wasn’t accomplished overnight
or without some ups and downs. One of those
“downs” resulted in a broken collar bone.

MM didn’t let that change the love of horse
related activities.

In addition to riding, teaching at Pony
Club, and driving there was marriage, 2 sons
and a job. After all horses do seem to take
our money!

From Kateland Farm to Walnut Hill and
others shows in between our MM is still
enjoying the world of horses. I had an
interesting time listening to MM tell of horses
owned in the past and the friends made over
the years. Wish you could have been there
too. I enjoyed getting to know this member
better.

Have you figured out who the mystery
member is? Let me know at the May
meeting. You may be surprised if you’re
right!

When: Wednesday, March 9, 2011, 7:30PM

Where: Visitor Education Center (VEC) associated with Springdale Farm -700 Colby Street, in Spencerport, NY

Topic: NDS Memories – Wayne Railsback will be showing pictures from various club events

25th NDS Show

WOW – 25 years of the NDS SHOW! Let’s make this a really special event!!! Laurie N. and Sue Z. will be co-chairing the 25th annual NDS show. Since the advertisers in the 2010 show program will be given free advertising in the 2011 show program, we need to find some new advertisers. Please let Esther R. know if you have any suggestions for advertisers and also sponsors for classes for this year’s show. Laurie is working on the show prizes. A show committee meeting will be scheduled within the next month.

NDS Annual Dinner

The annual dinner went well. Tara D.thanked Kathy P., Laurie N.r, Bob B., Nancy M., Amanda C., and Esther R. for their help, as Jim K. was not able to chair the dinner this year. The proceeds from the auction were $2,700. Lodge on the Green has been reserved for next year’s dinner. We sold 140 items at auction again this year, and made about $200 more than last year. Unfortunately, last year was down $700 from the year before.

GVEC Seminar

Tara thanked two of the board members, Sue Z. and Amanda C., for representing NDS at the GVEC annual seminar. Many attendees stopped at the NDS table for more information, and Sue and Amanda suggested that a NDS brochure or flyer with the website address would be helpful to hand out at next year’s seminar. Some attendees also asked about names of people who train horses to drive, and the Board will discuss making up a list of trainers with members’ help.

Coffee box for Meetings

For about ten years I have supplied a “coffee box” to the general membership meetings throughout the year. This box includes coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cream and sugar in addition to necessary dry goods. I would like to “retire” and pass this responsibility on to some other interested person.

The club will reimburse you for items required to keep the box supplied for each meeting. After the meeting, the coffee pots must be cleaned and thoroughly dried before storing until the next time they are needed.

If you would be interested in helping the club in this way, please call or e-mail me. March of this year will be the last time I will be providing the box.

             Allison Brunsdon 964-2148 Allison234@rochester.rr.com

Updates and Tidbits

Clinic: NDS will use a local clinician for this year’s clinic to keep costs low this year for the club. Janet Connor and Sue Z. have graciously offered their farms for this year’s clinic.

Newsletter: Esther R. will be writing the newsletter starting with April of this year. Please submit any articles, news or ideas to Esther at 585-392-3156, Railsback@Frontier.com

New board members: Terry B., Amanda C., and Janet C..

Website: The NDS website has been updated. Check out the new calendar and info http://northamptondrivingsociety.org/

Quilt: Many people at the annual dinner were interested in the horse quilt that was displayed there. Jane P. had won the quilt in 1995, which the PHOWNY horse club had raffled as a fundraiser. Sue Z. and Kathy P.will coordinate a similar “quilt” fundraiser for NDS.

CDE Clinic: Sue Z. handed out flyers for a CDE clinic that will be held at her farm in May 2011 with Jeff K.as the clinician.

Don’t forget the meeting!

Where: Visitor Education Center (VEC) associated with Springdale Farm -700 Colby Street, in Spencerport, NY

Topic: Dr. Amy Leibeck of GVEC will be speaking at the November meeting

Meeting at Ray’s

On Sunday, October 24th, the Cable’s of Silver Shoe Farm in Batavia invited NDS to their farm. 25 members were in attendance.

There was no formal meeting, however it was mentioned that if anyone is interested in either running for office or becoming a member of the board of directors to please inform one of the current officers. Our current officers have agreed to continue. There will be 3 vacant board of directors seats. We are in the process of seeking members to fill these vacancies. Please inform an officer if you are interested or know someone who may be.

Luckily, it was a comfortable relatively dry day for us to visit Silver Show Farm. Ray had Dr. Wende Bush discuss hoof anatomy and some aspects of diseases of the hoof such as laminitis and navicular. Ray went on to show us his display case of many different and unusual shoes and the uses for them. His display is wonderful and prompted many questions and discussions.

Nancy B. is chairing the clinic, which will be held on Friday, May 14, through Sunday, May 16, 2010, at Kateland Farm with Jeff Morse as the clinician.
